La Guerche-de-Bretagne
La Guerche- de -Bretagne is a French municipality with 4264 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Ille -et -Vilaine in the Brittany region; it belongs to Arrondissement Fougères - Vitre and the District of La Guerche- de -Bretagne.
History
La Guerche- de -Bretagne was in the early Middle Ages on the border between Brittany and the Breton Mark. The " Forêt de La Guerche " is a remnant of the forest boundary that separated the Brittany of Bas- Maine. Etymologically, " Guerche " a fortified structure made of earth, such fortifications date mostly from the 7th to the 9th century. From the eponymous " Guerche " nothing remains. The historian N.-Y. Tonnerre assumed that the fortifications in La Guerche- de -Bretagne was not a protective measure against the French or the Anjou, but the Normans. 1890, the village name was changed to La La Guerche Guerche- de -Bretagne.
