La Patrie, Quebec

La Patrie is a municipality in the south of the Canadian province of Quebec. It is located in the Estrie region, about 60 km east of the city of Sherbrooke. La Patrie is part of the Regional Municipality of Le Haut- Saint- François, has an area of ​​206.95 km ² and has 749 inhabitants ( 2011).

Geography

La Patrie is located a few kilometers southwest of Mont Mégantic ( 1105 m), the highest elevation of the Montérégie hills. The town on the left bank of the Rivière au Saumon is surrounded on all sides by vast forests. A part of the municipal district is Parc national du Mont- Mégantic. Around twelve kilometers south of the town, the border with the U.S. state of New Hampshire. Neighboring municipalities are Hampden in the North, Val- Racine in the northeast, Notre- Dame-des -Bois in the east, Chartierville in the south and Newport in the west.

History

The founding of La Patrie was made in 1873 by Pierre Vaillant, who had returned from Rhode Iceland to Quebec and opened a sawmill. The settlement was first called Notre- Dame-des -Bois, but soon sat down the name La Patrie ( " home " ) by, derived from the name of the local newspaper. 1878 was the parish, 1889, the civil parish. The main industries of La Patrie have always been agriculture and the timber industry. The renowned guitar manufacturer Godin was founded here and operates in place today for one of the now six workshops. After the founding place named is a series of classical guitars.
