La Villedieu-du-Clain

La Villedieu -du- Clain is a commune in the department of Vienne in the Poitou -Charentes. It counts 1545 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) and is the administrative center of the canton of the same name.

Geography

La Villedieu -du- Clain, about 15 kilometers south of Poitiers on a plane above the Clain valley. To the east of the village of Bois de la Vayolle, a crisscrossed by hiking trails forest, which stretches over several square kilometers begins.

History

The place is a former Commandery of the Order of Malta.

Buildings and monuments

  • The Commandery Gaillard was built between the 15th and the 17th century, later modernized. His dovecote is classified as a Monument Historique Inscrit.
  • The church of Saint -Jean -Baptiste is protected as a monument historique. In its history, it has been largely rewritten. The apse was removed, rebuilt the nave. The portal is Romanesque, the corbels and capitals richly decorated. On the facade of a small arches supported Sims is attached. Inside the stoup and a gilt wood crafted a bust reliquary of St. Remigius from the 17th century are worth seeing.
