LacusCurtius

LacusCurtius Bill Thayer is operated by a website that deals with the history of Ancient Rome.

On the previous site online in 1997 mainly ancient texts are provided free of charge. These are for the most part by English translations of Greek and Latin authors whose copyright has expired and are thus freely accessible, so among other things, Polybius, Diodorus, Suetonius, Appian, Cassius Dio, Ammianus Marcellinus and the Historia Augusta. The bulk of the translation is derived from the known Loeb Classical Library. In some cases, not only the translation, but also the original text is made available; in some cases even this is available ( eg in Curtius Rufus ). The extensive range is thereby extended at irregular intervals.

In addition, among other things, some older academic essays and the (albeit outdated ) Dictionary of Greek and Roman Antiquities (1875 ) are available on the website. Also, A Topographical Dictionary of Ancient Rome ( 1929), work to Britain in Roman times as well as several photos and maps are available for inspection at LacusCurtius. Separate from LacusCurtius operates Thayer still a main page is linked to from the other sub-pages, among other things, on the subject of the Civil War.

The name LacusCurtius is intentionally designed as camel case, to avoid confusion with the Roman myth of the Lacus Curtius.
