For export it is only with a 1.7 liter petrol engine (60 kW/82 hp, 137 km / h ) are offered.

Basis of the Niva (VAZ 2121) was the same in 1976 published Shiguli / Lada 2106, whose engine was built up in the 1990s in the Niva. In the Soviet Union there were in addition also with Niva 1300 (engine type 21013 ) and 1500s motor (motor type 2103 ).

Since 1993, a version produced with 500 mm longer wheelbase and additional rear side doors as VAZ 2131. In addition to the car model, there is also a 4-door panel van version, which will be built as ambulances, fire trucks, military armored vehicle and other special versions. The model is not offered in all export markets.

The only major revision of the Niva (apart from detail changes with the Shiguli models at the same time ) was the facelift in 1995. The Niva got a new dashboard, a new speedometer, a new steering wheel with impact absorber and a modified rear lower bumper and new tail lights. Also new was the 1700 motor ( types 21213: carburetor or 21214: injection with G- Kat ).

The mid to late 1990s, a 1.9 - liter diesel engine with 69 hp Peugeot was also available, which today is no longer built from the factory.

1998, a new model as Lada Niva was introduced in 2123, which was to replace the Niva long term. Due to financial problems, the production was discontinued in 2002 and the model is produced as Chevrolet Niva since 2002 founded by the 2001 joint venture GM- AvtoVAZ. This car is not officially sold in Western Europe.

In 2009 there was a general modernization of the now 30 -year-old model. Has changed the dashboard, the front turn signals and the technical equipment. In most countries, this version of the model has since been marketed as Lada 4x4. In addition, there was only him as a three-door. There is for the Italian market it parallel to 4x4M this as a commercial vehicle under the name Lada job.

While the model name Lada Taiga is in Austria since its launch in use, this name is used for the German market only since May 2013. The name change was necessary because the Niva no longer met the requirements of the Euro NCAP. As a small series manufacturer Lada does not need to meet these requirements in order to continue to offer the model in Europe. The manufacturer code was changed from XTA in WLX. A successor to the taiga to be introduced in 2015 or 2016. The designated model has already been presented as Lada XRAY.
