Lady in the Dark

Lady in the Dark is a Broadway musical with music by Kurt Weill and lyrics by Ira Gershwin song. The book is by Moss Hart, who also took over the game line. The Musical (now Neil Simon ) Theatre premiered on Alvin on January 23, 1941 on May 30, 1942 was the last of 467 performances. In the original cast played Gertrude Lawrence ( Liza Elliott ), Danny Kaye ( Russell Paxton ), Macdonald Carey ( Charley Johnson), and Victor Mature (Randy Curtis) with. The German -language premiere under the title The Lost song was on May 24, 1951 at the State Theater in Kassel. The translation into the German comes from Adolf Stemmle and Maria pond. As the lady in the dark, the musical was staged in 1976 in Lübeck in a translation by Karl Vibach and Marianne Schubart. Again, in a new translation of Roman Hinze Lady in the Dark was shown in October 2011 at the Hannover State Opera under the direction of Matthias David.

Content

The piece uses the then current expectant psychoanalysis as a theme and processed experiences of the author during his own analysis of Gregory Zilboorg. The main character Eliza Elliott is the editor in chief of a major fashion magazine, professionally successful, but unhappy and can not decide between two men. Only at the very end she realizes that a third man is the right one. The plot progresses chronologically continued, Liza is shown over and over again at work and dealing with their personal problems, then always follow back scenes in which she talks to her psychoanalyst and tells him the dreams that are then played as a musical scenes.

Filming

The film adaptation from 1944, also titled Lady in the Dark, by Mitchell Leisen starring Ginger Rogers is based on the musical, but no need for a large part of Weill's music, including on the central My Ship.
