Laelia anceps

Laelia anceps is a species of the genus Laelia in the orchid family ( Orchidaceae). The species is a popular ornamental plant, of which many varieties are commercially available.

Occurrence

The species grows epiphytic on isolated trees in the forests of Mexico and Guatemala at altitudes of 500 to 1,500 meters. On the natural sites it is often directly exposed to sunlight.

Features

Like all species of the genus Laelia anceps grows sympodial. The pseudobulbs are ovate, 5-7 cm tall, laterally compressed and each carry one or two band-shaped, about 15 cm long leaves. The inflorescence reaches a length of 30 to 70 cm and carries two to five flowers. These are variable in shape and coloring. They are usually pale to medium-bodied violet-pink with strong purple middle lobe and weißgerandetem, yellow throat with red lines. Their diameter is from 8 to 10 cm, the sepals are about half as long as the petals.
