Lagarfljót

Lagarfljót is a lake and a river in the east of Iceland to Egilsstaðir in the community Fljótsdalshérað.

Lake

The lake Lagarfljót or Lögurinn has an area of 53 km ², it is about 35 km long, up to 2.5 km wide and up to 112 m deep. The rivers Kelduá and Jökulsá í Fljótsdal 're from the South, the largest inflows. About 20 other rivers flow into the lake.

To the east of the lake is the largest forest in Iceland, Hallormsstaðaskógur, west of the waterfalls Hengifoss and Litlanesfoss.

Similar to the Scottish Loch Ness is also here tells of a sea monster, the Lagarfljótwurm which is to live in the depths of the lake.

The road Upphéraðsvegur (No. 931) encircles nearly the entire lake. In summer, a tour boat Lagarfljotsormurinn is operated, which is named after the monster.

Flow

The river leaves the lake, also named Lagarfljót. In Egilsstaðir performs, established in 1958, over 300 meters long bridge of today Hringvegur across the river. She was up to the completion of the ring road, the longest bridge in Iceland. Its predecessor dated from 1905 and stood for at that time a remarkable technical achievement dar.

The Lagarfljót flows northwards to join together just before the confluence with the river Jökulsá Brú and open into the bay Héraðsflói in the Greenland Sea. On the way there was the Lagarfoss, a waterfall. From him only rapids are left, since the vast amount of water is used in a power plant.
