Lago di Monate

The Lake Monate is in the Italian region Lombardy ( province of Varese ) situated pre-Alpine glacier origin.

Geography

It is embedded with 2.5 km ² in size and 41 meters depth between Lake Maggiore, Lake Varese and Lake Comabbio in a slightly elevated location amidst rolling hills. The Lake Monate is fed by underground springs and has few aboveground tributaries, one of which is the Rio Freddo in the municipality of Osmate. The Lake Monate drained in the village Travedona on his only outlet, the Torrente Acqua Negra in the 73 m deep Lake Maggiore.

Located on Lake Months villages are Cadrezzate Comabbio, Osmate and Travedona - months.

The location of the lake and the fact that a large part of the shore plots are privately owned, have helped make the Lake Monate has remained a preferred and clean lake today. Therefore, many bathers cavort in the summer months in the purpose-built beach baths. Especially popular is pedalos and canoes. Sailing and windsurfing are permitted, motor boating, however, is prohibited.

To reed beds and dense overgrown forest pieces alternate to wide sections of the shore.

History

Fishing was once the main source of income for the population of the surrounding villages. The fishing rights were bought for the first time in 1652 by the Milanese noble family Biglia, they sold in 1783 to the Duke Pompeo Litta Arese. In the 19th century were the same to the Borghi family (which had previously already acquired the rights to the Comabbio ) passed.

In 1898, fishing has been introduced with modern criteria of the breeding and selection of Pio Borghi, while rainbow trout, freshwater perch and whitefish were grown.

In 1864, sunken Pfahlbaureste were discovered in the lake, of which two larger in the village Cadrezzate and one in months. In this case, objects of stone and bronze, various ceramic utensils, polished stone axes, parts of looms and the remains of three canoes were discovered. The wood came from the same a single large tree, whose age has been dated at 2500 BC. Roman grave stones and a consecrated to Jupiter votive tablet unearthed in the surrounding villages Travedona - months Osmate and Comabbio.
