The nuclear power plant Laguna Verde (Spanish Central Nuclear Laguna Verde, abbreviation LVNPP ) is the only Mexican nuclear power plant. It is located in the municipality of Alto Lucero, Veracruz.

The nuclear power plant consists of two boiling water reactors, each with 682.5 MW installed capacity. Block 1 was on 29 July 1990, and Block 2 on 10 April 1995. Nuclear power plant covers in full load operation for about three percent of the Mexican electricity consumption. Holdings is the nuclear power plant of the state organization CFE ( Comisión Federal de Electricidad ).

The power plant was received strong protests from the population built, which persisted even after commissioning. Reasons for the protests are insufficient safety measures and potential environmental damage, but this was viewed by the government as not problematic.

In March 2005, there were press reports that the Mexican government has ordered a shutdown of the power plant, which is not to be expected in the near future due to the low age of the plant.

Incident

On 12 July 2002 an incident occurred INES level when lifting the block Laguna Verde 1 occurred after 2 inspections and repair of minor leaks in the main steam line to a reactor scram occurred. According to the IAEA report, reason was human error in controlling the reactor pressure. The restoration works and other controls, it was found that the make-up of the reactor system was not operational due to lack of monitoring procedures for at least one year.
