Lågøya

Lagoya ( German Flat Island) is an entity belonging to the Norwegian Svalbard archipelago island at the northern entrance of the Hinlopen Strait immediately northwest of the island of North Country.

Geography

The island lies off the output of the Lady Franklin fjords and is located around 5 km from the belonging to Nordostland Botniahalvøya peninsulas in the east and in the south Storsteinhalvøya. Northeast you are offshore Nordlysøyane ( German Northern Lights islands). Lagoya ² is 14 km long and 12 km wide with an area of 103.5 km. The island is mostly flat, only near its easternmost point it reaches a height of over 50 m.

Flora and Fauna

The vegetation is very scanty on Lagoya. However, the island is an important breeding area for seabirds such as the Sabine's Gull. Also Thorshühnchen and eider ducks are native here. Since walruses on Lagoya encountered and calve here, the island is often visited by tourists ships. There are plans to issue an annual driving and prohibition on landing for the period from 15 May to 15 August for the west coast of the island. Lagoya part of the established in 1973, Northeast Svalbard Nature Reserve.
