Laima AndrikienÄ—

Laima Liucija Andrikienė ( born January 1, 1958 in Druskininkai, Lithuania) is a Lithuanian politician and belongs since 2004 to the European Parliament as a member of the European People's Party.

Academic career

Andrikienė studied economics and mathematics at the University of Vilnius. In 1980 she received her college degree, followed in 1986 her PhD in Economics and 2002 to 2004, she was finally associate professor at the Department of Political Science at the Law University of Lithuania, as well as director of the Institute for Policy and Governance of the European Union and Dean of the Faculty of Public Administration. Furthermore, it was 1988-1989 Fellow at the University of Manchester, and in 1996 a Fellow at Georgetown University in Washington DC. Andrikienė 2007 was awarded by Kingston University, an honorary doctorate.

1980-1983 Andrikienė worked as an engineer in the computer center of the Lithuanian Institute of Agricultural Economics. After that, she was a research assistant and later Senior Research Fellow of the Institute (1983 to 1989). before they Assistant to the Deputy Minister of Lithuania was President between 1989 and 1990.

Political career

Party affiliation

Andrikienė was active in the Lithuanian independence movement Sajudis. In 1993 she was one of the founders of the Homeland Union, whose board she served until 1998. In 1999 she founded the Patriotic People's Party and was its chairman until 2001. Then she became a member of the Union of Right and returned in 2003 finally back to the Homeland Union. Since 2006 Andrikienė is a member of the Party Council of the Homeland Union.

Political offices

Andrikienė was a member of the Lithuanian Supreme Council and a signatory of the Act for the restoration of Lithuanian independence. From 1992 to 2000 she was a member of the Lithuanian Parliament. During this time she was in 1996 Minister of Industry and Trade as well as 1996 to 1998, Minister for European Affairs. 1998-2000 Andrikienė was chairman of the Lithuanian delegation to the Baltic Assembly and Chairman of the Presidium of the Baltic Assembly. Since 2004 she is a member of the European Parliament.

Since 2005 Andrikienė is a member of the Board of Directors of the Jewish Institute of Vilnius
