Lake Amatitlán

Located in a caldera

The Amatitlán Lake is the fourth largest lake in Guatemala.

It lies about 26 km south of the capital, Guatemala City at an altitude of 1188 m above sea level. The freshwater lake fills a volcanic caldera and is about 15 km ². It is 33 m deep at the deepest point, on average it is 18 m deep. On the western shore of the lake is the town of the same name Amatitlán, a few kilometers south of the Pacaya, one of the most active volcanoes in Central America.

Through a railway embankment of the lake is separated into two parts, resulting in different biological states result. In the Amatitlán Lake to 2005 untreated sewage capital were admitted. Due to a renovation project, the water quality could now be significantly improved.
