History

The Lake Barlee was discovered in 1869 by John Forrest. Forrest's expedition that was searching for the already long lost Ludwig Leichhardt, sank in the mud, as if to cross the salt lake on March 19. After they had freed the horse from the mud, she painted almost a week around the lake. On March 25, Forrest climbed a hill in the area and saw from there the great expanse of the lake. He named him then to Frederick Barlee (1827-1884), Colonial Secretary of Western Australia.

The Lake Barlee was declared along with several smaller satellite lakes of BirdLife International in a 1937 km ² Important Bird Area (IBA ) because there one of the largest ever found hotbeds of Banded Stilt ( Cladorhynchus leucocephalus ) was found from the family of the avocet with 179,000 nests. Other water birds that have demonstrably been brooding on this lake, are mourning swans, Australian shelduck, rose ear ducks, bald stilts (Himantopus leucocephalus) and Rotkappendotterels (Charadrius ruficapillus ).
