Lake Bernhardsthal

The Bernhard Thaler pond ( rarely also: Bernhard Thaler Lake ) is located east of the center of Bernhard valley in the northeast of Lower Austria. With an area of approximately 25 hectares it is the largest body of water in the wine district.

1458 will be the first time ... teichten ... documented in a contract of sale at Bernhard Thal and 1570 three ponds are in a sharing agreement called: Under the Reinthaler Teicht ( Upper Pond at the western end of the village ), the Kesselteicht and the lower - so the large current pond Behind the Kirchteicht.

During the Josephinian land survey in 1787, the upper and lower pond was drained and subsequently be used as meadow or arable land.

Between 1838 and 1839 large quantities of soil were taken for the railway embankment from the drained bottom of the pond during the construction of the Northern Railway.

After council decision of 1984, the public acquisition of land by the community pond and after extensive construction work was carried out in several sections of the small (inner ) Pond on 7 November 1991 and the large (outer ) Pond on 17 September 1992 was flooded.

Due to necessary remediation measures at the beginning of October, the pond was ( as so often in its history ) left out and fished in 2007. The recent flooding took place on 30 November 2008.

The pond is now used primarily for recreational purposes.

But not only the pond but also the built of brick bridge in the north runway is a cultural and historical specificity represents the bridge with two smaller and one larger arc was planned by Carl Ritter von Ghega.
