Lake Brunner

Lake Brunner is with an area of ​​40 km ², the largest lake in the northwest of the South Island of New Zealand. The lake is fed by several smaller rivers, including the Crooked River, Poerua River, Orangipuku River and Eastern Hohonu River. The outflow of the lake is the Arnold River, a tributary of the Grey River.

The lake is located 31 km south-east of Greymouth. The main settlement on the lake is Moana on the north coast. Other settlements are near the lake Te Kinga on the northwest side and Mitchell on the south side. The Arnold Valley Road connects the lake with Stillwater in the northwest, the Maoana Rotomanu Road with Rotomanu in the southeast.

The lake lies several kilometers inland from State Highway 6 and is less than other places in the West Coast visited by tourists. In the lake where you can fish for trout.

Lake Brunner is named after the discoverer of the 19th century Thomas Brunner. The Maori call the lake Kotukumoana ( Reihersee ).

It is close to the Kiwi Conservation Park, a nature reserve is located.
