Lake Chaubunagungamaug

The Lake Chaubunagungamaug (also Webster Lake, Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg and several other unofficial name ) is a lake east of Webster, Massachusetts - about 70 km south-west of Boston not far from the border with Connecticut. The relatively insignificant lake is known for its many alternative names, one of which is the longest place name in the United States of America.

The Nipmucks and other tribes gave him a number of similar names that are to Webster hardly speak of the vast population. Therefore, they referred to him as Webster Lake. The spelling of the long name varies frequently, even on official signs near the lake.

The approximate meaning of the name is Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg " Englishmen at Manchaug at the fishing grounds on the border ." Manchaug was the name of one of the tribes who lived on the shore of the lake, which was known before the arrival of the English as Chaubunagungamaugg or " fishing grounds on the border ." The lake was a well-known Fischfangort on the border of several tribal areas and was therefore also frequently used as a meeting place.

Larry Daly, editor of the Webster Times, wrote a humorous article about the lake and the dispute over the meaning of his name. He suggested the ironic translation " you are fishing on your side, I fish on my side, nobody fishes in the middle ", which met with so much public acceptance that the actual translation is very little known.
