Lake Khanka

The Khanka (Russian Ханка озеро / Chanka Ozero ) is one of the largest lakes in Asia. It lies on the border between China and the Eastern Siberia (Russia).

The lake has a length of about 95 kilometers and covers an area of approximately 4190 km ² (of which 72%, 3030 km ² in Russia), eight times as large as Lake Constance. Larger inflows are Ilistaja, Komissarowka, Melgunowka and Spassowka. The river Sungatscha, tributary of the Ussuri, acts as a drain. This town is on the Siberian side of the shore area the only grown in the former Soviet Union rice was planted many years. This area was one in Siberia to the most fertile soils, where in addition to rice and corn, soybeans, and tomatoes were grown. At the same time Khanka breeding area of Mandschurenkranichs, one of the rarest cranes in the world. On the Russian side were therefore five, isolated from each other and surrounded by agricultural land nature reserves, the Khanka Reserve, established. In the northeast of the lake, this natural protection zones collide with the Xingkai -Hu reserve together on the Chinese side. Again, the region belongs to valuable farmland in the region.
