Lake Kipawa

Outflow regulated

The Lac Kipawa is a lake in the region Abitibi- Témiscamingue management in the western Canadian province of Quebec.

The Lac Kipawa has an area of 284 km ². Main tributary is the Rivière Kipawa. This also forms the natural drainage at the northwest end of the lake. The outflow of the Rivière Kipawa in Laniel is regulated by the Laniel Dam. Erected in 1911 Kipawa dam at Kipawa allows a further outflow of the lake. About the Ruisseau Gordon a small part of the water of Lac Kipawa flows directly to the Ottawa River below the Lac Témiscamingue. The memory space of the outflow regulated lake is 673 million m³.

There are plans for a hydroelectric power plant, which exploits the difference in height between Lac and Lac Kipawa Témiscamingue. The water would be diverted and the lower reaches of the Rivière Kipawa missing.
