Lake Kyoga

The Lake Kyoga (English Lake Kyoga ) is a relatively shallow lake in central Uganda. It is drained by the Victoria Nile, which flows on coming from Lake Victoria to Lake Albert. In Jinja, the lake flowing water is regulated by the Owen Falls dam. Its catchment area 75,000 km ² and its maximum length is about 115 km (northern part of the lake ).

The shallow and riparian areas are mostly overgrown with water lilies, papyrus and water hyacinth.

46 species of endemic fish species were detected and there are large crocodile populations.

Heavy rains in 1997 and 1998 led to a rise in the water level, resulting in floating mats of papyrus and water hyacinth were that contributed to the fact that the outflow was blocked to the Nile. The additional increase water flooded about 580 km ² of land, which meant that people had to be resettled.
