Lake Memphremagog

Lac Memphrémagog (English Lake Memphremagog ) is a lake of glacial origin between the cities of Newport, Vermont ( USA) and Magog in Quebec City ( Canada).

The lake has a length of 44 km. 73% of the lake area are located in the Canadian province of Québec. There you will find his discharge, the river Rivière Magog, a tributary of the Rivière Saint -François. Three-quarters of the catchment area are in the U.S. state of Vermont.

In Vermont, the cities of Derby and Newport share the lake area, both located in Orleans County.

In Quebec City, the lake is distributed to the places Austin, Magog, Ogden, Potton, Saint- Benoît -du -Lac and Stanstead Township, all located in the regional county municipality of Memphrémagog.

The water table is at 207 m. The maximum water depth is 87 m. In the lake there are 20 islands. The 31 -hectare Ile de la Province ( Province or Iceland ) is the largest island in the lake. Through it runs the international border.

The dam Barrage du Memphrémagog is located at the outflow of Lake Memphrémagog. It was built in 1920, has a height of 9 m and a width of 55 m.

The associated hydropower plant Centrale Memphrémagog has two turbines with a total output of 1.9 MW.

The name " Memphremagog " is derived from the Algonquian word for " where there is a large body of water is " off.

Ecology

Like many other lakes, the Lac Memphrémagog of phosphate enrichment, sediment and other contaminants affected. Since the 1970s, various measures have been taken to improve the water quality of Lake Memphrémagog. 1994 was established for this purpose the Lake Memphremagog Watershed Association.

Hydrology

Four Rivers in Vermont flow directly into the lake: Clyde River, Barton River, Black River and Johns River.

The lake freezes in winter and reaches ice thicknesses of up to one meter.

Lighthouses

At Lac Memphrémagog there used to be three lighthouses that supported the boats on the lake at its navigation. These three lighthouses, Maxfield Point Light, Newport Wharf Light and Whipple Point Light, are no longer available.
