Lake Nasser

The Lake Nasser (Arabic بحيرة ناصر, Buhairat Nassir ), named after former Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser, Egypt is in the dam as- Sadd Al-Ali ( السد العالي, also known as the Aswan High Dam ) in Nile valley formed dam, which lies south of Aswan. Part of the lake is also located in Sudan at Wadi Halfa, where he is called Nubia Lake.

The lake is about 500 km long, 5-35 km wide and contains about 165 cubic kilometers of water.

On the one hand, the dam enables regulation of the water flow rates of the Nile in the agricultural border zones. By the other hand, eliminates the annual Nile flood and thus the shipment of high- nutrient-containing Nilschlämme. Result, the fertility of the agricultural land has plummeted, so the farmers use fertilizers to compensate for the nutrient removal by crops.

The rise of the water level began in 1964; to 1976, the lake had reached approximately its present water level. Before the flooding some famous ancient monuments were (eg, " Abu Simbel " ) dismantled and rebuilt in secure locations from 1959 ( rescue campaigns in several countries under the auspices of UNESCO). Other less important ruins of buildings from ancient Egypt to medieval Christian period were partially exposed, measured and recovered their small finds, before disappearing under water.

The lake or the Aswan Dam is also the reason why the Nile Delta is no longer being pushed into the sea, but abraded by waves and currents. The lack of annual flooding also leads to an increased drop in the Nile Delta; this has been previously compensated by the floods, which always zoom washed new sediment.

Another consequence of climate change are in Upper Egypt, where the air has now become a bit cooler and wetter because of the greatly increased evaporation, which soon has affected the quality of certain agricultural, in need of high air dry products such as dates.

Currently being built on Lake Nasser in the context of the Toshka project, a gigantic pumping station to the west to provide large desert areas of the Nile water.
