Lake Tritonis

The Tritonis (Greek Τριτωνὶς λίμνη Tritonis limne; Latin Tritonis Lacus Palus or Tritonis ) may be identical with a large salt lake in southern Tunisia today, Arabic called Schott el-Dscherid/Chott Jerid.

Apparently this lake has stood by the river Triton in connection with the Mediterranean in ancient times. It was named for Triton, as his native country, he is sometimes shown. Triton is said to have helped the Argonauts when their ship festlag in its lake.

How many other bodies of water also, he was brought as part of the Atlantis research with the fabled lost city in connection therewith; this theory was last represented mainly by Leo Frobenius and Paul Borchardt, Albert Herrmann and Ulrich Hofmann.

Another tradition that was written down by Diodorus Siculus, brings the Tritonis ( in literal translation Triton swamp ) with the Amazons in combination, are said to have lived on the island Hespera Triton swamp.

Pausanias 1, 14, 6 also gives the Tritonis to as the birthplace of Athena.

According to the ancient Tritonis the same waters was named in Powerscourt Gardens.
