Lake Tumba

The Tumbasee is depending on water levels from about 500 to nearly 800 km ² large flat -water lake in the Equateur province in the north- west of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The maximum 6-8 m deep lake is located 40 km south of the city of Mbandaka and slightly to the north of the May Ndombe Lake about 15 km south-east of the River Congo, with which it is connected by the Irebu channel, at an altitude of 340 m. The lake is rich in fish and has several islands. The only runway connection to the lake leads to the town Bikoro on the eastern shore. Stanley discovered the lake in 1883.

The area around the lake is home to a rich fauna, among primates, chimpanzees and bonobos to call.

A site on the lake suggests a Neolithic settlement and close the " Tumbakultur ".
