Lake Tuz

The Lake Tuz ( Turkish known for " salt lake " in ancient Latin as Lacus Tatta ) is a salt lake in Turkey and after the Lake Van is the second largest lake in the country. With 32.9 % salt content, it is one of the most saline lakes in the world.

It is located in the dry plateau between Ankara, Konya and Aksaray. The salt lake has no outlet and is fed by rainfall (250 mm per year ) and groundwater. In the summer months then creates a crystalline layer of salt. At the lake there are three salt mining factories. 70 % of consumed salt Turkey comes from here.

The best view of the lake has one of Sereflikochisar on the main road from Ankara to Aksaray. At the lake edge rushes grow. The majority of the Turkish pink flamingos nest here. With about 500 breeding pairs here is the second largest colony of gulls Armenians in Turkey.

Depending on the angle of the incident light, the surface of the lake can be different colors. In recent years there has been a project for the storage of natural gas under the salt lake.
