Lancaster Sound

Geographical location

The Lancaster Sound (English Lancaster Sound) is an approximately 50 km wide strait between Devon Island and Baffin Island in the Canadian territory of Nunavut. To the east lies the Baffin Bay, Barrow Strait in the west and south of the Prince Regent Inlet. It was named after James Lancaster Lancaster Sound (about 1554-1618 ) by William Baffin.

The Lancaster Sound is part of the Northwest Passage, which was elucidated by William Parry 1819-1820 and 1850-1853 by Robert McClure 1903-1906 and go through the first time by Roald Amundsen.

The water of the Sound is iced up around nine months a year. The Lancaster Sound offers many animals habitat; for example, polar bears, snow geese, narwhals, belugas and many seabirds are found.
