Lance Berkman

William Lance Berkman ( born February 10, 1976 in Waco, Texas) is an American baseball player in the major leagues. After more than ten years with the Houston Astros, he played briefly with the New York Yankees in the team of the St. Louis Cardinals. Since 2013 he is with the Texas Rangers under contract. He has played in his career as a first base man, and as a designated hitter outfielder.

Career

Berkman played in the college team of Rice University and was selected by the Houston Astros in MLB Draft 1997 in the first round as the 16th player ever. After two years in the minor leagues in 1999, he gave his debut in the major leagues. Although he had previously played as a first baseman, he came with the Astros in the outfield for use. In 2001, he finished with a batting average of .311 in fourth place in the National League. In that year he was elected for the first time in the All- Star team the NL. In 2005 he signed with the Astros a six - year contract for 85 million U.S. dollars. After an injury of Jeff Bagwell, he moved to first base. On 13 June 2009, he hit his 300th home run.

On July 31, 2010 Berkman was transferred from the Astros to the New York Yankees and was there mostly as a designated hitter for use. After the end of the season, the Yankees took an option to extend the contract not true. On December 4, 2010 Berkman signed for eight million dollars a one-year contract with the St. Louis Cardinals.

Private life

Berkman has four children with his wife Cara: Hannah Leigh, Carly Anne, Katie Mae and Abigail Primm.
