Land of Michałowo

The Michel Auer country is a historic territory in Poland in the city Brodnica ( Strasburg ) on the middle Drwęca ( Drewenz ) between the Kulmerland in the West, Masurian Voivodeship to the north and the south. About the meaning of the name, the linguists are not unanimous. However, it is likely to represent a landscape description ( Old Prussian " loba ": valley, deepening; cf. Latvian " lubene ": Meadow ). The most important city in this region is Lobau.

History

For the first time mention is made of the terra Lubavia 1216 in connection with a Prussian castle, Dusburg speaks of " Terra Culmensis et Lubavia ". For the city of Lobau dated the first written proof of 1240. The small tribal territory was colonized by the Teutonic Knights. It was among the objects of several peace agreements between the Teutonic Order and Poland. The Treaty of Kalisz ( 1343 ) and the peace of Melnosee ( 1422 ) confirmed the rule of the Teutonic Order. In the Second Peace of Thorn in 1466 it came to the Prussian royal ownership under the Polish crown. It now belonged until 1772 to the Province Culmer country. With the Lublin Union 1569 Royal Prussia was unilaterally declared as part of the Polish-Lithuanian Rzeczpospolita, but this was not accepted. With the first partition of Poland in 1772 by Michel Auer country came to the Kingdom of Prussia and was a circle Michelau part of the province of West Prussia.

When the circuit Kulm was already assigned due to Article 4 of the Tilsit peace to the Duchy of Warsaw, Prussia had to cede even the circle Michelau on this because Article 2 of 2 Elbląg Convention of 10 November, 1807. 1815 the Kulmerland and also the Michel Auer country came back to Prussia. In the reorganization of the administration of the former county Michelau in the circles Lobau and Strasburg was divided in the Prussian government district Marienwerderstraße.
