General

The beach sailing has a long tradition that stretches back to 1600 in Europe. Were the beach sailors originally four-wheeled utility and transport vehicles, so today's beach sailors are almost exclusively used as sports equipment. See also sail car around 1600.

Form and design of the beach sailors

Typically, a modern beach sailing like a kayak on three wheels with a sail. Simpler models consist only of the bare pipe frame. The beach sailor is controlled by a driver on a steerable front wheel. On some models, the wheels in the winter can be exchanged against runners, see ice sailing.

A special form of beach sailing represents the Kitebuggyfahren in which not a sail, but a stunt kite takes over the drive.

Classification and regulations

The beach sailors are divided into classes. The distinguishing features of the classes are the design, the defined dimensions and masses and sail areas substantially.

The rules for beach sailing are created and edited by FISLY ( Federation International de Sand et Landyachting ), the World Federation of beach and land sailors. This set of rules is mandatory for all who run sailing on the beach or country and is divided into three sections:

  • Sailing Rules ( transport regulations )
  • Racing Rules ( competition rules )
  • Annex - here particularly highlight the specifications of each sailing classes.

Basically, these rules for everything, by definition (see article 3 ( 1) of these regulations ) is a beach sailors apply.

, In Germany as in other countries, a sailing license (also called pilot's license ) required. This is a special license for land and beach sailing. Furthermore, in Germany a special liability insurance required, which expressly covers the risk of the beach sailing.

Sports exercise

High performance beach sailors reach today speeds up to 130 km / h the amateur or recreational athlete, however, go far below such speeds.

Areas

A stronghold of the beach sailing in Germany is Sankt Peter-Ording, where on the local well-defined stretch of beach, a member of the Yacht Club of St. Peter -Ording is prescribed. In addition, beach sailing is also exerted on the East Frisian islands of Borkum, Juist, Norderney and Langeoog. An equally well-suited area with proven beach for the beach and a sailing club based in the south is the island of Romo in Denmark on Sønderstranden.

Far away from the coastal beach sailing is also operated on larger flat meadows, fields, parking lots or other suitable surfaces, the wind as a motive power usually weaker or unsteady blowing than on the coast.

Competitions

It will be carried out in the beach sailing national and international championships.
