Landgravine Elisabeth Amalie of Hesse-Darmstadt

Elisabeth Amalie of Hesse- Darmstadt Magdalene ( born March 20, 1635 casting; † August 4, 1709 in Neuburg an der Donau) was born a Princess of Hesse -Darmstadt and by marriage, first Duchess of Palatinate -Neuburg, Jülich and Berg and later also Electress of the Palatinate.

Life

Elisabeth Amalie was a daughter of the Landgrave George II of Hesse- Darmstadt (1605-1661) from his marriage to Sophie Eleonore (1609-1671), a daughter of the Elector Johann Georg I of Saxony. Elisabeth Amalie, strictly Lutheran brought up by her mother, was a princess of prepossessing exterior with striking blond hair, which should have kept into old age.

On September 3, 1653 Elisabeth Amalie married in Langenschwalbach 's 20 years older, later to become Elector Philipp Wilhelm of the Palatinate. The marriage had come to the mediation of the Landgrave Ernst von Hessen- Rhein rock to pass, when Elisabeth Amalie had converted first secretly and without the knowledge and consent of their family to Catholicism. She took publicly and solemnly the new creed on November 1, 1653 in St. Andrew's Church from Dusseldorf to, in the presence of the Elector and Archbishop of Cologne Maximilian Heinrich.

The 37- year-long marriage was considered to be extremely happy. The extremely pious Elector couple lived and coined Dusseldorf in the first years of marriage, through the establishment and equipping of churches and monasteries. Later, Philipp Wilhelm and Elisabeth Amalie increasingly attracted back to Neuburg, where the Electress, who survived her husband nearly 20 years, was buried in the Hofkirche.

Progeny

In the course of their marriage Elizabeth Amalie was 23 times pregnant. She gave birth to nine sons and eight daughters. With their sons- Elisabeth Amalie was a dynastic central figure of her time.
