The Diet passed state laws, elects the prime minister of Thuringia and controls the work of government. Several buildings are used in the Arnstädter street from Parliament in Erfurt. Street side is dominated by a 1936-1939 erected by Wilhelm Pook neoclassical building complex in which offices are housed. Behind it are several new buildings from the years 1998 to 2003, including also the plenary hall, which hosts the meetings of Parliament. Furthermore, part of the 1950 to 1951 built skyscraper in the administration of former district Erfurt, colloquially called egg crate, to the buildings of Parliament. Suffrage

The Parliament is elected for five years. Are entitled to vote all Germans who are 18 years old on election day and at least three months in Thuringia residing or staying usual. The election of 88 deputies carried out according to the principles of the people associated with choice of proportional representation. In 44 constituencies 44 constituency members are elected directly; the other half of the deputies elected on the national party lists. Win a party or a constituency association, less than 5 percent of the vote, they can not send deputies in the parliament ( five-percent hurdle). However, the seats are not eliminated, but are - distributed to the other parties - depending on their strength. This happened for example in the state elections in 2004 with a total of 16.4% of the votes cast.

Election results since 1990

From the five, held since 1990 federal election, the CDU always emerged as the strongest force. After a CDU / FDP coalition from 1990 to 1994 and a Grand Coalition 1994-1999 Thuringia was ruled from 1999 to 2009 by the CDU alone. The last state election was held on 30 August 2009, since then ruled again a coalition of CDU and SPD.
