The municipality is located in northeastern Langanesbyggð Islands in the region Norðurland eystra.

On 1 January 2009 the municipality had 508 inhabitants. The two largest settlements are Þórshöfn (375 inhabitants) and Bakkafjörður (78 inhabitants).

Geography

The northern part of Langanesbyggð is on joining in a northeasterly direction approximately 30 km sprawling peninsula Langanes, the east adjacent to the north-west of the bay Þistilfjörður Bakkaflói. Extremity of this bay are the three fjords Finnafjörður, Miðfjörður and Bakkafjörður, they border on Langanesströnd. The southern tip of the church is Einbúi.

History

The community was through the merger of the rural community Þórshöfn ( Isl Þórshafnarhreppur ) and the rural community Skeggjastaðir ( Isl Skeggjastaðahreppur ) formed in 2006. This Skeggjastaðir moved from the region Austurland in the region Norðurland eystra. The alternative name suggestions Gunnólfsbyggð, Hafnarbyggð and Langaneshreppur could not enforce the electorate.

Þórshöfn

Þórshöfn (German Thors port) is located on the eastern edge of the Lónafjörður, a spur of Þistilfjörður. Already since 1846 Þórshöfn was a trade center, although here only from 1875 onwards were consistently living residents. Beginning of the 20th century won the herring fishing and the processing of meaning. Despite the fact that the herring fishery is set, the inhabitants live mainly from fishing.

Population Development

As now most areas except the southwest of Iceland around the capital Reykjavík Langanesbyggð is affected by strong rural exodus. From 1997 to 2006, the population decline was in the area of ​​today's community 17%.

However, one can note a slight increase since 2007 in Þórshöfn.
