History

Due to the cholera epidemic of 1832 decided to build its own hospital for the densely populated Faubourgs the northern quarter, as the previous devices had proved insufficient. After different projects were discussed, started in 1846 the construction of the hospital under the architect Martin -Pierre Gauthier ( Membre de l'Institut ). Established in 1854, inaugurated hospital was built by the then hygienic performances of individual pavilions to avoid infections. Two-story buildings were built on the 52,000 m2 of land, a part for women and another part for men. The buildings are symmetrically laid out and connected by glass corridors. The main facade is located opposite to the Rue Ambroise Paré -, the main portal (with four Doric columns ), at the end of the rectangular courtyard, the chapel was built. The facade of the chapel is decorated with statues that symbolize the charity, hope and faith. These statues and the rest of the sculptural decoration was carried out by Noel -Jules Girard.

Today the hospital is named after the Countess de Élisa Lariboisière ( born January 22, 1794 in Paris, † December 27, 1851 ). She was the daughter of Antoine Roy, Minister of Finance under Louis XVIII. , And wife of Charles de Lariboisière. He was the son of Jean Ambroise Baston de Lariboisière, a general of Napoleon. Élisa de Lariboisière died without issue, and bequeathed to the city of Paris for most of her assets for the construction of a hospital. In the chapel is a marble tomb of the founder, the work of sculptor Charles Marochetti.

Today's state

Originally planned for 600 beds, has the hospital after the extension works of the 1980's now 1,200 beds. 1986, the three-story subterranean building was completed under the large courtyard and dedicated to the helipad on the roof of a new building on the edge of the site. The hospital serves as a university hospital for medical training. The technical orientation is designed and Neurosensorielle medicine ( neurology, neurosurgery, neuroradiology, ENT, ophthalmology and Headache Clinic ) towards focusing on the areas of emergency medicine (first aid, intensive care, cardiology ), locomotor system ( rheumatology and orthopedics). Lariboisière serves as a national reference center for rare vascular diseases of the brain and eyes ( Centre de Référence de Maladies Rares vasculaires du Cerveau et de l' Oeil: CERVCO ).

Conservation

Since 1986, following part of the hospital are listed buildings ( monument historique ): The Chapel, the facades, the roof structure and the covered walkway.
