Lars Leksell

Lars Gustaf Fritiof Leksell ( born November 23, 1907 in Fässberg; † January 12, 1986 in the Swiss Alps ) was a Swedish neurosurgeon.

Life

Leksell studied medicine at the Karolinska Institute. There he began his neurosurgical training in 1935 under Herbert Olivecrona. After his retirement in 1960 Leksell was his successor as professor and chief of neurosurgery.

Lars Leksell regarded as the founder of radiosurgery. Together with the Swedish physicist Börje Larsson, he led the high-precision radiation treatment in 1968 with the gamma knife through. His concept of a single-stage high-precision radiation while sparing the extensive target area structures called Leksell Radiosurgery in allusion to the complaining " surgical precision ."
