The Aeropuerto Internacional de Las Américas " Dr. José Francisco Peña Gómez " ( IATA: SDQ, ICAO code: MDSD, in short: Aeropuerto Las Américas ) is an international airport which is located in Punta Caucedo, near Santo Domingo and Boca Chica in the Dominican Republic. The airport was the largest in the Dominican Republic and also one of the largest in the Caribbean, but has since been overtaken in passengers from Punta Cana privately operated airport.

Aircraft up to the size of Boeing 747 and Airbus A340 can start in Las Américas and land. Aerolíneas Argentinas, Dominicana de Aviación and Iberia were among the airlines that temporarily anflogen the airport with Boeing 747. Iberia flew from Madrid to Las Américas daily until the cessation of this compound in April 2013 with aircraft of the type A340. Today (May 2012) Air France flights to the airport to 747-400.

Las Américas was the hub for Dominicana, APA Dominicana International and other smaller airlines.

History

On February 15, 1970, a Douglas DC -9, the Dominicana De Aviación crashed on its way from Las Américas in San Juan, Puerto Rico from. In this case, all 102 people on board died.

On 12 November 2001 an Airbus A300- 600 of American Airlines crashed over New York. This 246 passengers, nine crew members and six residents died. The plane took off from John F. Kennedy Airport and was en route to Las Américas ( see also American Airlines Flight 587 ).
