Lasker versus Bauer, Amsterdam, 1889

Lasker - Bauer, Amsterdam 1889 is a chess game that was played in an international tournament champion in Amsterdam in the first round on 26 August 1889. They went down in chess history because of the later world champion Emanuel Lasker won it by a spectacular double bishop sacrifice in shiny styles. Lasker led the white stones, Austrian chess master Johann Hermann Bauer had black.

This double bishop sacrifice was previously applied in 1884 ( Burn -Owen, 1884) only in an incorrect form of John Owen against Amos Burn in Liverpool. It went into the routine of knowledge of later generations after Lasker's game. Over time, there was even at the highest level occasionally used. A prominent victim was former world champion Anatoly Karpov in his game against Judit Polgár in Hoogeveen 2003 ( Polgar - Karpov, 2003). Karpov was however on after the first sacrifice on h7 and could no longer be demonstrated, the second on g7 along with Matt reduction. Three other prominent examples can be found in the games Nimzowitsch Tarrasch, St. Petersburg (1914, Tarrasch, Nimzowitsch, 1914), G. Kuzmin Sveshnikov, Moscow 1973 ( Kuzmin Sveshnikov, 1973) and Miles Browne, Lucerne 1982 ( Miles Browne, 1982).

Comments on the game

Lasker selects the Bird Opening.

This narrows the Bc8 and makes it a "bad runner". It makes sense is the willingness to Abtausch against a white light figure by 3 ... Bc8 - g4. Because of the disruptive 3 ... d4 the coverage 3.Sg1 -f3 is more accurate.

4.Lc1 -b2 Bf8 - e7 b7 - b6 5.Lf1 -d3 -f3 6.Sg1 Bc8 - b7 - c3 7.Sb1 Sb8 - d7 8.0-0 0-0 9.Sc3 - c7 - c5 e2 10.Se2 - g3 Qd8 - c7 11.Sf3 - e5 Sd7xe5 12.Lb2xe5 Qc7 - c6 a7 - a6 e2 13.Dd1 - Black built himself passively to all of his characters while white against the black kingside positioned. Especially his langschrittigen runners have taken the king position in sight.

Even the stronger 14 .. d5 -d4 15.Le5xf6 Le7xf6 16.De2 - g4 Kg8 - h8 ( 16 .. e6 - e5 -e4 17.Ld3! ) 17.Tf1 -f3 Rf8 - g8 18.Ld3xh7! would, according to Kasparov Black can not save.

The introduction to the decisive attack.

This is the point of the first runners victim. Thereafter, the black king stands there completely exposed and is at the mercy of white heavy figures. It now threatens mate on h8, Black is forced to hit on g7.

Against the threat on Matt h3 there is only one train.

This gives Black the opportunity to make his lady interpose on h6.

Apparently Black has enough material equivalent for the lady, namely a tower and two runners, but Lasker wins now by a double attack on both runners a figure.

The game is decided by the material superiority of white. Black played a few more trains on, but then saw the hopelessness of his efforts.

And Black resigned last.
