Lassy (Calvados)

Lassy ( Lascy, Lacy, Laceium, Lasceium, Lachi, Vassy ) is a commune in Normandy in north-western France with 344 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ). It belongs to the department of Calvados.

Church

The Church of Lassy is down to a couple of old parts is a relatively modern building in a cross shape. The pointed arch portal is surmounted by a steeple with a slate-roofed dome. The bells were melted down in 1804 and 1806 by Charles Moisson.

Hugh de Lacy

From this village the family of Hugh de Lacy (1020-1049) emerged. Hugh de Lacy is the father of Walter de Lacy ( Lascy, Laci ) ( 1046-1089 ) of William the Conqueror in 1066 ( William I ( England)) accompanied on his conquest to England. Jean ( John ) de Lacy ( 1192-1240 ) is one of the signatories of the Magna Carta. The descendants of " Hugh de Lacy " have acquired in England and Ireland extensive lands (see also Trim ( Ireland) and Trim Castle ).

A representative of the family is Peter Graf von Lacy was forced to leave Ireland in 1691. He was Field Marshal in Russia, Governor of Livonia. " Count Peter de Lacy " is the most successful representatives of a group of young Irish nobility were known as wild geese. Franz Moritz Graf von Lacy ( Francois Maurice Count de Lacy, Field Marshal under regent Maria Theresa) is the son of Peter Graf von Lacy. Franz Moritz Graf Lacy was in Vienna owner of Schloss Neuwaldegg and builder of Castle Wilhelmine mountain.
