Latvian Literary Society

The Latvian Literärische Society ( lett Latviešu literāriskā BIEDRIBA ) was founded by a 1824 German - Baltic Society for the study of language, folk songs and culture of the Latvians. The company had its headquarters in Riga and Jelgava.

Founders and members of as the " Society of Friends Latvians " ( lett Latviešu draugu BIEDRIBA ) designated learned society were primarily Baltic German scholars, mostly pastors from Kurland and southern Livonia. Later, this involved pastors, writers, and other educated people of Latvian nationality.

August Bielenstein about the purpose of the Company

"We were told at that time the public accusation that we (the Latvian literärische society ) tend to consider the Latvian people and their language only as a research object and darböten the result of our research by the international scientific, but not of the Latvian people promoted knowledge, education, and spiritual well-being. .. I must admit that my person especially for the international scientific community has to work, but I'm also occurred with all his energy to it that our society in the name of Latvians Friends ( Latviešu draugi ) lead more than a mere empty title is yes. .
