Lauenburg Castle

The Lauenburg is the ruin of a two-part hilltop castle - Large and Small Lauenburg Lauenburg - in the resin ( Ostharz ) near the village of Stecklenberg in the district of Harz, Saxony -Anhalt. They were built in the Middle Ages.

Geographical location

The ruins of the Great and Little Lauenburg Lauenburg located on the south-west of Stecklenberg (hamlet of the town of Thale ) the castle mountain in ( 356.1 m above sea level. NN ), a northern spur of Rambergmassivs. They are about 200 meters apart.

Description

The two-piece castle was in the third quarter of the 11th century as an imperial castle built under Henry IV and in 1164 first mentioned. The construction of pre-and main castle probably took up to ten years. Purpose of the plant, which had more than 350 m total length, was the protection of Quedlinburg and the nearby highways. In 1180 it was conquered in wars of Frederick I ( Barbarossa ). Later temporarily housed robber baron in the castle until it was destroyed in the 14th century.

The owners of the castle were the lords of Sommerschenburg. The plant was sold after 1740 on abortion.

While the main castle is heavily decayed, a few remains of the towers and outer walls are still standing, including the dungeon below the castle, whose ruins are already clearly visible from a distance.

Castle model and Hiking

At the village church in Stecklenberg a model with a reconstruction of Lauenburg 1:20 scale was available, which gives a good impression of the former castle.

The ruins of Lauenburg, which is freely accessible, is included as No. 187 in the system of stamp locations of the Harz hiking pin.
