History

After Napoleon's defeat at the end of 1813 the Battle of Leipzig marched the allied armies (Russia, Prussia, Austria ) towards France. In disregard of Swiss neutrality Basel 1814 allowed 80,000 soldiers crossing the middle bridge and the march through the former Prince-Bishopric of Basel to fight against Napoleon's army. This gesture was not forgotten at the Congress of Vienna and brought to the state of Basel, under certain conditions, the incorporation of the nine Catholic villages of Birsecks.

For the victors it was 1815 in Vienna, first to choose a new ruler of the abandoned prince-bishopric, which could defend militarily, the clefts and passports. It is this area the French had in 1797 used as a pretext for the invasion of Switzerland. Basel was not suitable. Only Bern possessed the necessary military power. Berne has also been verburgrechtet with Biel and südjurassischen valleys.

The Aargau and Vaud, the Bern had already lost in 1803 were already recognized by the Act of Mediation as cantons, and the question of compensation Berns seemed secondary. The rule Pfeffingen there were in 1815 already for more than twenty years no longer. It would have been little point in Duggingen and Grellingen not attributable Bern .. The Birstal forms a geographical unit to the castle Angenstein, which was a strategic Klus and the gateway to the Jura for the Berner.

Basel did not want the Laufentaler. It contented itself with the merger of the villages of Biel and Benken with the Birseck. Similar to 1803 when Frick Valley Basel did not want Catholics and not too many farmers. Already in 1798 had Landschäftler three bailiwick locks set on fire and their Aufmümpfigkeit got Basel still feel hard to 1833.

As the law in 1979, an independent canton, was isolated from the Canton of Bern and become an exclave Laufental was given the opportunity to join a neighboring state, or to stay in Bern. There were the cantons of Solothurn and Basel-Land to choose from. A connection to the canton of Basel-Stadt was also examined at the beginning, but soon recognized as an unrealistic option. In a first referendum on September 11, 1983 voted nearly 57 percent of the population of the district to remain with Berne. Once was in 1984 but became known that the Canton of Berne had the " action of Canton Bern, Laufental » illegally supplied with money, war broke out years of litigation. Ultimately, the Supreme Court demanded the repetition of the referendum and on 12 November 1989, the Laufentaler decided by a majority of 51.7 percent for the membership of the Canton Basel-Land. On January 1, 1994, after the Confederation had agreed as a whole the change of canton, the country acceded to the canton of Basel-Landschaft.
