Laurentius Andreae

Laurentius Andreae Lars Anderson, Lawrence Andreä (* 1470 Straengnaes, † April 14, 1552 ) was a Swedish theologian, statesman and reformer.

Life and work

Laurentius Andreae attended school in his hometown, then studied in Skara and Uppsala and was subsequently canons Straengnaes. Other university study led him to Leipzig, Rostock and Greifswald and he visited Rome several times. In 1520 he was archdeacon of the diocese Strängnäs. The local deacon and Domschullehrer Olaus Petri, who had studied in Wittenberg in 1518, made him familiar with the teachings of Martin Luther.

When was Gustav I Vasa in 1523 elected to the Diet of Strängnäs a king, he called him at the city's cathedral to the king, and was commissioned as its secretary with the introduction of Martin Luther's Reformation in Sweden. He designed cautious and conservative at the Swedish Church to a national Protestant establishment. Together with Olaus Petri, he translated the New Testament from 1526 into Swedish, where they used Luther template.

Around 1530 difficulties were encountered with the king, who did not tolerate criticism. As Andreae demanded greater freedom for the Church, the differences are amplified. After the king wanted to abolish the office of bishop and introduce a state church, Andreae was relieved of his position in 1538. Thereupon both reformers withdrew, but this did not protect it from further adjustments. On a treason trial in Örebro, Andreae and Peter were accused of treason and sentenced to death on January 2, 1540. After multiple interventions of the king commuted the sentence to a fine.

Andreae retreated then back to Strängnäs. He was still consulted because of its expertise in the king a few times. His work on the translation of the Bible into Swedish he continued, which was published in 1541 when Gustav Vasa Bible.

Backed he died, 1552. His grave is preserved in the churchyard of the cathedral at Strängnäs.
