The laurels (Laurus ) are a genus of the laurel family ( Lauraceae ). The genus Laurus consists of three types: the genuine laurel (Laurus nobilis) from the Mediterranean region, the Azores laurel (L. azorica ), native to the Azores, Madeira and the Canary Islands and Laurus novocanariensis ( syn.: Laurus canariensis ) the earlier together with the Azores laurel (Laurus azorica ) was regarded as a single species. All species are evergreen shrubs or small trees that are 12 to 20 feet high. The leaves are undivided and entire. The native countries of laurels in the Mediterranean, the Azores and the Canary Islands. They are hardy only conditionally. Previously, many more species were still placed in the genus Laurus, are assigned to the currently other genera.

Many plants bear the term laurel as part of their name, mostly because their leaves have a similar shape. While about the California laurel ( Umbellularia californica ) by their belonging to the family of the laurel family ( Lauraceae ) is still relatively closely related, include the Indonesian bay leaf ( Eugenia polyantha ) and the West Indian bay ( Pimenta racemosa ) to the family of Myrtengewächsen ( Myrtaceae ) and the laurel fig ( Ficus microcarpa ) belongs to the mulberry family ( Moraceae ). The laurel cherry (Prunus laurocerasus ), which is often referred to as cherry laurel, is not closely related with the laurels, but belongs to the rose family ( Rosaceae ).
