Laxiwa Dam

The Laxiwa Dam on the Yellow River, which is also called Longyang Gorge Dam, is located in the Chinese province of Qinghai in construction. The dam will be the second highest in China with 250 m height after the Xiaowan Dam is also under construction. ( The dam of the Three Gorges project is significantly lower at 110 m. ) Two more large dams in China are planned: Jinping I and Xiluodu.

The hydropower plant will be the largest on the Yellow River with 4200 MW of installed capacity. With six turbines, each 650 MW to 10.23 TWh per year are produced. Thus, the peak consumption in the power grid northwestern China will be covered.

The dam is a double curvature arch dam in a relatively narrow valley. The outlets of the spillway go through the dam. The power plant is housed in an underground cavern on the right bank.
