Cheirotonie or cheirotonia (Greek χειροτονέω, hands stretch out ) refers to the public, not secret ballot by arm or hand signals in the early democratic Greek cities as part of a People's Assembly.
Cheirotonie referred to further the imposition of hands on the bishop, priest and deacon ordination.
