Layne Beachley

Layne Beachley ( born May 24, 1972 in Sydney ) is a former professional surfer from Manly, Australia. She was seven times world champion of the ASP World Championship.

Career

At the age of 16 Beachley became a professional surfer. At the age of 20, she was sixth in the world rankings. Beachley won in 1998 for the first time ASP Women's World Cup. This title she won after that in the years 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2006.

In 2004 Beachley received a wildcard for the men's competition EnergyAustralia Open in Newcastle.

Beachley said on 10 October 2008 her resignation for reasons of age.

In 2004 she won Laureus World Sports Award in the category "Alternative Sportswoman of the Year ".
