LDE – Columbus

The Columbus was a locomotive with the Leipzig- Dresden Railway Company ( LDE).

History

The locomotive came on the recommendation of the Saxon consul in the U.S. LDE. Similar locomotives had proven a success with the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad. (see Tom Thumb ) It was built in 1835 by Gillingham & Winans in Baltimore / USA.

In the annual reports of the locomotive LDE was later referred to as unreliable and unusable. Several attempts to return the locomotive to the manufacturer failed.

1842, the locomotive when buying the PEGASUS was added at the Saxon engineering - Compagnie in Chemnitz in payment. Their further fate is unknown.
