And Others

The Bourgeois Gentleman ( original title: Le Bourgeois gentilhomme ) is a ballet comedy by Molière ( Jean- Baptiste Poquelin, 1622-1673 ) and the composer Jean -Baptiste Lully, probably the earliest amusing musical theater history. The premiere took place on October 14, 1670 before the court of King Louis XIV in the Chambord castle, where Pierre Beauchamp contributed the ballets.

The wealthy, but rather simple-minded businessman Monsieur Jourdain in Paris wants to be a member of nobility, because he dislikes his bourgeois existence. In order to form as the future aristocratic noble Lord, he is a music teacher, a dance teacher, a fencing master and a philosopher as well as a tailor with his companions. His pretty daughter Lucile he wants to make the Marquise by trying to marry her to a nobleman, but Lucile loves Cleonte, a middle-class merchant, whom she wants to marry against the will of the Father. He falls in love with an elegant Marquise and advertises mannerly, turning them plentifully. Dorante, an impoverished nobleman, intrigued with the love affair with the venerable Marquise Dorimène and covers its own debts. Jourdain's wife criticized his silly charity and suspects that the noble pair of foul play drives with him and his money. Jourdain, the edelmännische citizens, eventually becomes the victim of a refined family plot. Cleonte realizes that he can only marry Lucile, if time permits Monsieur Jourdain, and now he appears as the son of a sovereign Turkish envoy to finally obtain the marriage. In a celebratory act Monsieur Jourdain is ultimately to " Mamamouchi " ( a neologism Molière ) appointed and celebrated a double wedding, as well as the chamber of Miss Lucile has the right husband, the valet of Cleonte found.

The comedy is a social satire from the time of Molière and acts in Paris. The figure of the citizen is typical for those Hypocrisy, up to date but even today, because the type of citizen's lives for a long time. The comedy obtains exactly what Molière intended: It is better to laugh and lives than to fret out of sheer grief and become a nuisance.
