Le Châtelard, Savoie

Châtelard is a town in the French department of Savoie in the Rhone -Alpes. It is the capital of the canton in the Arrondissement Le Châtelard Chambery.

Geography

Châtelard is located on 757 m above sea level. M., about 21 km northeast of the town of Chambery (air line). The village is located in the northwest of the Savoie département, in the center of the massif of the Wallows, at the position marked by a rock barrier constriction in the valley of Chéran, at the northern foot of the Grand Colombier.

The area of ​​18.00 km ² municipal area includes a strong section in relief of the massif of the Wallows. Main feature are the oriented in north-south direction terrain structures at Le Châtelard interrupted by the running in the southeast-northwest direction flow Chéran. West of the village, the river enters into a basin, in the south of the valley flows the Ruisseau d' Aillon. History

The first mention of Le Châtelard was in 1095 under the name Castellarium. Later, the names Castellard ( 1216 ) and Castellania Castellarii ( 1356) appeared. The place name derives from the Vulgar Latin word castellarium, about the means as much as by a fort guarded place. Since the Middle Ages was Châtelard center of castellany Boges, which included large parts of the inner bauges massif. From the castle, which was situated on the rock barrier at the village, today nothing remains. The place got some liberties in 1301 and was awarded a customs station on the narrow valley of the Chéran.

Attractions

The parish church of Le Châtelard dates from the 19th century. In the center row of old houses from the 17th and 18th centuries have been preserved in the typical Savoyard style. Also the hamlet Montlardier shows characteristic farmhouses.

Population

With 658 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Le Châtelard is one of the small communities of the department of Savoie. After the population declined sharply in the first half of the 20th century, a significant population increase has been recorded since the early 1980s again.

Economy and infrastructure

Châtelard was until well into the 20th century a predominantly by agriculture, especially dairy farming and animal husbandry, embossed village. The water power of the Chéran was formerly used for the operation of mills. In addition, there are today some of the local small business enterprises.
