Le Grand-Abergement

Le Grand- Abergement is a commune in the French department of Ain, in the Rhône -Alpes.

Geography

Le Grand- Abergement is located at 810 m above sea level. Level, about 14 kilometers southwest of the town of Bellegarde -sur -Valserine (air line). The farming village extends in the eastern Bugey, in the valley of the upper Valromey, in a depression on the eastern slope of the valley of the Séran, at the foot of the broad ridge of the Cret du Nu.

History

The municipality of Le Grand- Abergement was settled very early. There wall foundations of a Roman villa have been found. First mentioned is the place in 1198 under the name Alberjament and Albergamenti; of 1365 the name Alber Gement is handed down. Since its first mention of Le Grand- Abergement formed a parish that was from Nantua monastery dependent. In the Middle Ages, the village was under the suzerainty of the Counts of Savoy. The Treaty of Lyon Le Grand- Abergement arrived in 1601 to France.

Attractions

The parish church of Saint- Amand was built in the Gothic style forms. In the center and on the Jura hills numerous farmhouses are obtained in a traditional style from the 17th to 19th centuries. The Chapelle de Vézeronce on the Plateau de Retord was restored in the 19th century.

Population

With 108 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Le Grand- Abergement is one of the smallest municipalities of the department of Ain. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century, remained the population since the mid-1970s to nearly constant level.
