Le Grand-Bornand

Le Grand -Bornand is a commune in the French department of Haute- Savoie department in the Rhône-Alpes region.

Geography

Le Grand -Bornand is located at 934 m above sea level. M., northeast of Thones, about 23 km east of the town of Annecy (air line). The holiday and winter covers in the open valley of the upper Borne, in the Bornes Alps between the mountain chains of Pointe Blanche in the north and in the south Aravis.

History

Le Grand -Bornand is first mentioned in the 13th century. At the beginning of the 20th century, the secluded mountain village was gradually transformed into a holiday resort. The actual development of the winter, however, a continued until the early 1960s.

Attractions

Population

With 2185 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Le Grand -Bornand is one of the medium-sized towns in the Haute-Savoie region. During the 20th century, the population steadily increased due to high levels of emigration from (1901 were still 2019 inhabitants counted in Le Grand -Bornand ). Since the mid- 1970s, however, a significant increase in population was recorded again.

Economy and infrastructure

Le Grand -Bornand was up to the beginning of the 20th century, mainly stamped by agriculture and Alpine village. Today there are various operations of small businesses. Most working in the village workers find their income but in the tourism industry. In recent decades, Le Grand- Bornand and in particular the district of Le Chinaillon has developed into an important tourist resort. The community is mainly specialized in the winter tourism. Numerous cable cars and ski lifts connect the slopes and the summit of Mont Lachat de Châtillon. The ski resort of Le Grand -Bornand is connected to that of La Clusaz. Also in the summer half-year, Le Grand -Bornand is the ideal starting point for beautiful walks and other summer activities.

The place is a good infrastructure. Access is either by Bonneville through the valley of the Borne or Annecy via Thones through the valley of Fier. Further road links exist with La Clusaz or over the Col de la Colombière with Cluses.

There is a community partnership between the municipality of Quiberon in Brittany and Le Grand -Bornand.
